The Tainted Cup by Robert Jackson Bennett

Let me start by saying I bought this book as a Christmas Eve present for myself. I am so happy I did. The first read through (did you notice I said first) was so much fun. Mr. Bennett is a superb world builder.

The story is about an investigation into the death of an engineering officer. Din, the character whose perspective from which the story is told, is a new investigator and embarking on his first death investigation under the supervision of Ana a seasoned investigator. The mystery unfolds beautifully and the construction of the story within the unique world is perfect.

The world the characters inhabit is constructed using plants, and the people enhance themselves to focus on some attributes or physical aspect. There are also dangers in the wild world which is tamed yet always fighting back to remind the people how vulnerable they are.

I loved this book. So much so I’ve read it six times. Yes! Six! The writing is beautiful, the characters are interesting and relatable. I cared about them which is so important to a story. Each chapter brings you closer to the world and its people.

I would say this book falls within three genres: fantasy, science fiction, and mystery. A unique combination that holds your attention to the very end.

A warning. This book does have profanity and some soft sexual content. I say soft because nothing overt is written about, and it is merely a mention in the overall story.

I give this book five out of five and highly recommend it to fans of those three genres. I would say it is a perfect marriage of all three.

There is a second book “ A Drop of Corruption” and it too is just as great. Same main characters, different mystery to solve, and a different location within the empire.

I hope you enjoy this book as much as I did. Please leave your comments below because I’d like your opinion about the book.

I’m looking forward to my next read and review.

Blessings!
